What is an online gender reveal?

An online gender reveal is a gender reveal that runs in a web browser instead of on a table full of props. Guests open a link or type a PIN on their phones, cast a secret Team Girl or Team Boy prediction, and a shared screen runs the countdown and announces the answer to everyone at the same moment. It is also called a virtual or electronic gender reveal.

Most online gender reveal tools stop at the announcement: a link lands in a group chat, each person taps it alone, and confetti falls on a phone screen. That works, but it turns a party into a notification. The Big Guess is built the other way round — the phones are the controllers and the biggest screen in the house is the stage, so the reveal is something the room watches together rather than something everyone reads separately.

How to do an online gender reveal in four steps

1. Create the show. Whoever holds the secret creates a free show and enters the real answer. You get two 6-digit PINs: a host PIN for the screen and a guest PIN to share.
2. Put the display on a screen everyone sees. Open the display page on a TV browser, a laptop over HDMI, or a cast tab — or share it in a video call if your party is fully remote. It shows the QR code, the PIN, and the live voter list.
3. Guests vote from their phones. Guests scan the QR code or type the PIN, enter a name, and secretly pick Team Girl or Team Boy. The screen shows who has voted but never what they chose, so nothing leaks early.
4. Run the reveal. The host starts the reveal: predictions appear name by name while the tallies climb, a 10-second countdown runs, and the balloon pops in pink or blue on screen while the answer reaches every guest's phone at the same moment.

Setup takes about two minutes, and there is nothing to rehearse beyond opening the page on the TV once beforehand.

In the room, at home, or both

An online reveal usually gets pitched as the option for when family can't travel. It is better than that: the same show can run as a living-room party, as a fully remote watch party, or as the mix almost every family actually has.

What to look for before you pick one

• Nothing to install. If a guest has to download an app, some of your guest list simply won't play.
• A real vote, not just a reveal. The guessing is what makes it a game — tallies, teams, and the bragging rights afterwards.
• Secret until the host says so. The screen should show who has voted without leaking any picks.
• One moment, not many. Everyone should learn the answer at the same second, in the room and out of it.

Is an online reveal safer than a smoke bomb?
